漢字?チュノム?ローマ字の使い分けとリテラシー

ベトナムは、公文書として漢文を用いていた時期が長く、ベトナム語を表記するために発達したチュノムは、ベトナム語の発音に当てはめた仮借字や漢字の偏旁を独自に組み替えて作り出した形声字であり、完全な表音化を遂げなかったため、その普及がただちに識字層の拡大につながることはなく、この点表音文字が発明された東アジアの他の地域とは様相を異にしている。ただし、前近代におけるチュノム使用の中心は韻文詩の記録にあり、記録された韻文詩は読み上げられ音声化されることを通じて、口承だけによるよりも固定化されたテキストを広範囲に伝播することを可能にし、また漢文テクスト（仏教および儒教の経典）のチュノム訳注はのちの散文体の基礎を形作った。いっぽう、漢文を解する前近代知識人層の外側にリテラシーを広げたのは、フランスの植民地支配によって外部から「持ち込まれた」ローマ字表記であるが、その普及のプロセスは、外部からの「強制」だけを原動力としたのではなく、むしろベトナム人自身による内発的な受容と普及によるところが大きかった。本発表では、漢字、チュノムそしてローマ字表記との間の接続と断絶の双方に留意しながら、ベトナムにおけるリテラシーの拡大のプロセスをたどりたい。
The Differentiated Uses of Chinese Characters, Ch? N?m and the Latin Alphabet in Literacy

Vietnam used classical Chinese for official documents for a long period of time. Chu Nom, the phono-semantic script developed to write Vietnamese, was a unique combination of borrowed characters adapted to Vietnamese pronunciation and radicals of Chinese characters. Because it was not fully phonetic, its widespread adoption did not immediately lead to an expansion of literacy, a situation distinct from other regions of East Asia where phonetic scripts were invented. However, the primary use of Chu Nom in premodern times was to record verse poetry. Recorded verse poetry, read aloud and converted into audio, enabled the widespread dissemination of fixed texts more widely than through oral tradition alone. Chu Nom translations and annotations of classical Chinese texts also laid the foundation for later prose writing.
Meanwhile, the introduction of Romanization during French colonial rule helped expand literacy beyond the premodern intellectual class. However, its spread was not driven solely by external coercion, but rather by the spontaneous adoption and diffusion of the Romanized script by the Vietnamese themselves. In this presentation, I would like to trace the process of expanding literacy in Vietnam, paying attention to both the connections and disconnections between Chinese characters, Ch? N?m, and Romanization.
